Heart Attack on a Plate

Orange Sour Cream Donuts

2 lightly beaten eggs
¾ sugar
1 cup sour cream
3 cups sifted flour
½ tsp. cinnamon
¾ cup milk
1 tsp nutmeg
⅓ teaspoon baking soda
1½ tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
Grated rind of 1 orange*

You are going to love these. Preheat your deep fryer to 365 degrees. Combine the sugar, sour cream, milk and eggs and beat thouroughly. Sift the dry ingredients together 3 or 4 times. Add it to the egg mixture then add the orange rind.*

To cook them, add the batter to your Popeil donut maker and squeeze off as many as will comfortably fit in your deep fryer. After 3 to 5 minutes or so, they will be golden brown on one side. Gently flip them over to continue cooking. When they are nice and golden brown take them out to drain on paper towels. Serve warm. (These are good with powdered sugar sprinkled on them.)

This recipe makes a pretty big batch so if you want to eat some later, microwave them for about 11 seconds and they'll be as good as new.

* I think a shot of orange juice added to the batter would be really nice.. Don't be afraid to experiment.
